scans_daily suspended

For all members of scans_daily: the community has been suspended for posting copyrighted material without the permission of copyright holders, which is against LiveJournal's ToS. Before you ask:

1) At this time we don't know who made the complaint. But guys, we don't want this to turn into a witch hunt.

2) No, we don't have backups, but we're looking into recovering our entries. ETA: pandanoai made a backup early this month. You'll need this to view it. acroamatica has it mirrored here.

3) skalja set up a backup comm on insanejournal some time ago. If you're in dire need of scans, go here for now. ETA: A while ago, sir_razorback set up a message board for the comm here. comics_scans is another scan comm on eljay. Their rules and culture are a bit different from ours. If you join, be sure to read the userinfo before posting. stubbleupdate has set up noscans_daily. Please join, so we can keep our community together.

4) No, this will not be the end of us. Vive les scans!

5) ETA: Since people are asking about eljay's stance on fair use, from the TOS:

LiveJournal and its designates shall have the right, but not the obligation, to remove any content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable, or that infringes or is alleged to infringe intellectual property rights. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such content. Furthermore, LiveJournal reserves the right to limit access to your journal, if found in violation of the TOS, including without limitation the Member Conduct described below, by removing the journal and related user information from the member directory, search engine, and all other methods used in conjunction with finding LiveJournal's users.

and

[members agree not to] Upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary rights of any party

ETA: Guys, do me a favour and link to this post in your personal journals/blogs/whatever. I don't want people to get misinformation. I'm monitoring the comments and will be around to answer questions.

ETA: Update post here.

A toast to the community and the mods I say!

I wanna say thank you to the mods for everything you've done, for this information about what happened and for the future alternatives for our community (I almost wrote alternate futures there, which would have been very comic booky, eh?). Much appreciated.

I had fallen back on checking S_D the last few weeks and imagine my confusion and horror at finding it gone.

I hope that the suspension is a temporary thing, but in the meantime, and in case it's permanent, I'll look forward to seeing you all at some of the replacements recommended above.
It would be sad to see S_D go, it was really a great, open minded, and fun place.
But remember we're the ones that made it that way, so let's not just waste all those snarky comments inherent in all of us! Relocate! Never give up, never surrender!
B seeing you, folks!

And by using so many !-signs I suddenly feel like Stan Lee. Well... maybe not as verbose in my vocabulary as that but still.

Wow... just Wow.

Thanks for putting this update up; S_D was what got me interested in comics again, and it prompted a few purchases for me. I'll miss the community and hope to high hell we get something similar soon.

Good luck getting things up and running again. I hope things work out. I appreciate what you guys do for fandom. :D

Can I just add that Scans_daily was one of the only comic communities of it's kind that was actually both female and gay/lesbian/transgender friendly for the most part? Which was amazingly cool.

In so many Publisher vested review sites, girls are essentially told to "shut up and sit down" or harrassed by chavuanistic males in the forums. The majority of fans involved might have gotten snarky occasionally, but I think most fans felt very welcome to participate. I will definitely miss that.

To the mods - I know PAD is essentially blaming you for not "policing" well enough ('cause I guess it should be the mods job to save creators from butthurt when their work is criticized? Puh-leeze.) Ignore that, because I've always thought Scans_daily's mods did an exceptional job.

"Ignore that, because I've always thought Scans_daily's mods did an exceptional job."

Seconded. I only once saw someone attempting to post a whole issue (and it was by separating the posts), and a moderator quickly realized what was happening and alerted the poster to stop (which said poster did).

... Took them long enough. :p

You shot who in the what-now?

Kidding, I am totally up on what happened, if very late to scans_daily's wake.

While the sentiment has already been expressed many times here, I am oddly compelled to chip in and say I too am really sad to see scans_daily go.

Of course I also take it as a given that it'll come back in some form. Still, sad, sad, sad.

*hugs all around* Thanks for keeping us updated. Let us know what we can do to help.

this is pretty sad news.

I haven't been able to visit the site as much as I used to and I haven't really posted a lot but I'll miss scans daily.

You guys introduced me to a lot of comics that would have flied under my radar, some of good, some bad and some just scary wrong (and still haunt my dreams)

but I loved it the place all the same.

I have a solution, or at least the beginnings of one.

I have an idea for how to recreate scans daily legally and with buy in from the publishers, without hindering our third party control over the content. I have run large projects before, I have business and legal experience and am an avid comic reader. If the admins are interested, individually or as a group, I would like to start a discussion about this. I think I have a solution.

I really loved looking around scans_daily. I lurked most of the time but I always got a laugh not just from the scans but from all the wonderful, funny posters.

Now I can't say I've purchased many comics these days (studying abroad) but I can tell you that Scans_Daily

1) Helped me get through a recent class presentation on Watchmen

and

2) Was one of the reasons I decided to apply for an internship at Marvel. It didn't work out, but hey, I was inspired.

So thanks to the mods and the community for all the fun, hopefully thinks will work out for the best.

*comforts self with icon drinking*

I have an idea for recreating scans daily that will work

Please help me contact the s_d admins who were in charge. Thanks.

You can contact us at dailyscans[at]gmail[dot]com.

I'm very sad to see this happen. I've made a few random comments on twitter about this, but for now, all I can say is how sad I am that this has happened.

Sigh.
