scans_daily suspended
For all members of scans_daily: the community has been suspended for posting copyrighted material without the permission of copyright holders, which is against LiveJournal's ToS. Before you ask:

1) At this time we don't know who made the complaint. But guys, we don't want this to turn into a witch hunt.

2) No, we don't have backups, but we're looking into recovering our entries. ETA: pandanoai made a backup early this month. You'll need this to view it. acroamatica has it mirrored here.

3) skalja set up a backup comm on insanejournal some time ago. If you're in dire need of scans, go here for now. ETA: A while ago, sir_razorback set up a message board for the comm here. comics_scans is another scan comm on eljay. Their rules and culture are a bit different from ours. If you join, be sure to read the userinfo before posting. stubbleupdate has set up noscans_daily. Please join, so we can keep our community together.

4) No, this will not be the end of us. Vive les scans!

5) ETA: Since people are asking about eljay's stance on fair use, from the TOS:

LiveJournal and its designates shall have the right, but not the obligation, to remove any content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable, or that infringes or is alleged to infringe intellectual property rights. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such content. Furthermore, LiveJournal reserves the right to limit access to your journal, if found in violation of the TOS, including without limitation the Member Conduct described below, by removing the journal and related user information from the member directory, search engine, and all other methods used in conjunction with finding LiveJournal's users.

[members agree not to] Upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary rights of any party

ETA: Guys, do me a favour and link to this post in your personal journals/blogs/whatever. I don't want people to get misinformation. I'm monitoring the comments and will be around to answer questions.

ETA: Update post here.

The mod team is looking at our options; check this space for updates.

Hey, I set up a message baord for Scans_Daily back in December 2007. I figured that it would be nice to have a place we could gather in a place where the threads didn't dissapear after about 12 hours and stuff like that. Noby came except for one person though, mainly because I didn't want to spam everyone's threads with it. After what happened today I think it's a good time to dust it off.

Well, shoot. Darn it. S_D was my gateway into comics. I had an ugly introduction in 2007 with a jerk store worker (a girl? wanting comics? never!) and I had S_D on my flist for ages and forgot about it. Decided to get back in after hearing of Simone's run of Birds of Prey, bought the books, and thanks to the community, I was able to understand what was going on. The background was crucial for me to understand the whys and hows. It also helped because I didn't read every single series so I could keep up, as they all seem to be interconnected by publisher.

Well, this just blows.

Thank you so much for posting this! As a lurker, I wish you good luck in trying to resolve this issue.

Yikes, that sucks something fierce. Oi... Hopefully things get back up again soon.

I saw two fellow s_d'ers on my flist make entries and thought they just mis-typed it.

I have never had that "Oh god I lost something dear" hollow-sunken-feeling for a long time until I got home tonight. Without S_D I would not have gotten back into comics the way I did--Hell, the reason I checked out Blue Beetle was because of S_D. (That and there was awesomeness oosing from my monitor from the scans that lured me in, but I digress)

Hopefully this is resolved. Thanks for this post schmevil :) Hugs?

S_D was my introduction to DC and what made me more willing to expand from being a Marvel fan to just -comicbook- fan wanting to read more things and - it was fun.

Thanks Mods, I hope we can get it back up but if we can there's always viagra

I had just gotten an LJ last week to fully enjoy the beauties of scans_daily. D: At least I got my first post! :sobsobsob: It was good times... good luck with the future. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

What's being suspended about? Do they trash all our posts? How...I DON'T UNDERSTANDDDD!

WE can't access or do anything with scans daily. Unless the mods talk LIvejournal into reopening it, SD is gone.

-_- Some people just suck. Big time. And need real lives.

Sigh.... if it weren't for S_D I wouldn't even be touching american comics at all... D:

So upset to see it go. T_T

Stupid fricking-

Oh well. At least we're not completely dead; worst comes to the worst, we'll just relocate and start over, I suppose.

Maybe it was Conde Nast.

Shit, this sucks.

Excuse me while I try to formulate a complete sentence that doesn't involve me collapsing into dumbfounded gibberish.

Really not much to add, except that you folks will certainly dust yourselves off and start again. You're not beaten.

A bend in the road is not the end of the road!

The whole blaming Peter David thing (not directing this at anyone specifically) strikes me as a little odd. I doubt he alone was responsible (hell he even says the entry was gone before Marvel could act) but even if he was - he is in the right. SD frequently goes above and beyond fair use - I mean, sure you can pitch what we do as for review purposes or whatever, but you wouldn't put half a book online, or half a movie/tv show online and then say "this is for review". Why it would be any different for comics, I don't know.

The funny part of all of this is that we were working on a rules rewrite that included reduced page limits. The comm was going to be more copyright friendly, as it were, as soon as next week.
