scans_daily suspended
For all members of scans_daily: the community has been suspended for posting copyrighted material without the permission of copyright holders, which is against LiveJournal's ToS. Before you ask:

1) At this time we don't know who made the complaint. But guys, we don't want this to turn into a witch hunt.

2) No, we don't have backups, but we're looking into recovering our entries. ETA: pandanoai made a backup early this month. You'll need this to view it. acroamatica has it mirrored here.

3) skalja set up a backup comm on insanejournal some time ago. If you're in dire need of scans, go here for now. ETA: A while ago, sir_razorback set up a message board for the comm here. comics_scans is another scan comm on eljay. Their rules and culture are a bit different from ours. If you join, be sure to read the userinfo before posting. stubbleupdate has set up noscans_daily. Please join, so we can keep our community together.

4) No, this will not be the end of us. Vive les scans!

5) ETA: Since people are asking about eljay's stance on fair use, from the TOS:

LiveJournal and its designates shall have the right, but not the obligation, to remove any content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable, or that infringes or is alleged to infringe intellectual property rights. You agree that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such content. Furthermore, LiveJournal reserves the right to limit access to your journal, if found in violation of the TOS, including without limitation the Member Conduct described below, by removing the journal and related user information from the member directory, search engine, and all other methods used in conjunction with finding LiveJournal's users.

[members agree not to] Upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, or other proprietary rights of any party

ETA: Guys, do me a favour and link to this post in your personal journals/blogs/whatever. I don't want people to get misinformation. I'm monitoring the comments and will be around to answer questions.

ETA: Update post here.

The mod team is looking at our options; check this space for updates.

Well at least this explains a few things now. But I remember those X-Factor #40 scans. The dude didn't post the entire issue. Half the book scanned yeah. Plus he didn't scan the ending till people asked him too.

omg... and I had just started to de-lurk myself! S_D introduced me to so much comic love!

I'm so sad. scans_daily is what got me into comics, which I probably never would have been exposed to in the first place. I'm not gonna wank as that never solves problems, but I do hope there is a way get the community back up.

While I'm also sad that scans_daily is suspended, I don't think it's right to take it all out on Peter David. Ultimately, his intentions were good, even if he misinterpreted the community. This is certainly nothing to boycott him over.

We all knew it was coming eventually.

No, his intentions were not good; he was miffed because people didn't like what was doing with X-Factor, and threw a shit-fit and destroyed the community (and then lied about how much of the issue had been posted.)

Not only will I never buy anything he writes again, I'll giggle with well deserved schadenfreude when X-Factor gets canceled. Which it will - it's been on a pretty steady downward slide.

Thank you for posting this. I hope we can get the community back.

This is going to come around and bite the comic companies in the butt. How many people saw scans and said, "Hey, that looks good. I think I'll pick that up." How many have said that just here?

It will be interesting to see if there is a visible change in sales. (Of comics in general, and of one in particular that I'll be dropping like a hot potato now.)

Yes, thank you for posting this. At least I know what's going on... and to not buy that She Hulk volume I was on the fence about buying. In a perfect world it wouldn't matter, but I'm one of those people that have a hard time seperating a writer from his work...

writers and their work.

As much as I don't much like Marc Millar's work, I'm yet to read an interview of his that I disagree with.

hey, i don't know if someone else already has provided this, but i backed up the S_D comm in LJ archive on February 6th, so i have everything of it up until then (minus the comments i think... which is super sad)

but let me know if you want it, i can PM you a link to download it or what have you.

OMG, that would be awesome! If nothing else, I'd love to be able to recover my Living Armor scans post for posterity.

Just when I think the comics publishing industry cannot possibly top their last instance of egregious stupidity (ex: Batmna RIP), they do something to prove me wrong. I'm pretty sure s_d was responsible for getting more people to shell out cash to line Marvel & DC's pockets than any other single site on the internet.

guys, we don't want this to turn into a witch hunt.

In my experience, fandom always wants things to turn into a witch hunt. That said, I vote that of we must select a scapegoat, we blame Dan Didio and Joe Quesada, whether or not they have anything remotely to do with it. After all, they both must be used to fan hatred by now, and are pretty much totally impervious to all criticism - a massive witchhunt against one of them wouldn't even hurt their feelings, I suspect.

I am really sorry to see this, let me throw in on, scans has had a major effect on which comics I bought, and definitely increased my reading comics I otherwise would not have given a second glance.

This sucks.

Thanks for posting this. I'm so sad that it's been suspended; S_D pretty much got me back into comics and introduced me to a lot of new stuff.

Was very sad to hear about this. S_D also increased my comic buying as well. I probably would never have started reading Green Lantern Corps if not for Scans_daily.

I know, the rainbow rings thing and OMG the Guy... I always thought GLCORPS was supposed to be more of the Hal show and then S_D opened my eyes to the glorious Guy content. I immediately bought the trades.

I did't follow s_d religiously, but browsing through it was always good on lazy Saturday mornings. Seeing it go like this is more than sad.

Kudos on the quick mod (and community) response, though. Here's hoping that you guys can get it back and going again soon and I've linked back here from my journal, too.

"Quite an experience to live in suck, isn't it? That's what it is to be without scans_daily.

I've seen posts most people wouldn't believe. Fandom 'ships on fire off the Kirby version of Orion. I watched Gail Simone glitter in the thread near the Warren Ellis post.

All those posts will be lost in time . . . like tears in rain.

Time to dieget this community restarted again, no matter what it takes."

In seriousness, they can take down the community but they can't dissolve all the good scans_daily has caused. All the books people have been convinced to read only because of this community. All the communal joy. Hell, all the stories, friendships and goodwill that his community has inspired, both online and off. Even if this is the end - which I'm sure it sure as hell isn't - I'll take this moment to humbly thank all the Mods and everyone else who's made this place such a welcoming, delightful community.

Viva La Scans_Daily!

And for those of you who feel like giving up . . .

Like everyone else I am echoing a thanks for posting this. I'm really shocked and disappointed, frankly.

That said, please let us know if we as members of the community can do anything specific to aid in bringing it back or defending it in general.

OMG. I never turn off comment notifications, because it's the best way to track conversations in a big post, but holy shit.
